Featherdale Wildlife Park

Today was officially my tenth day in Australia!  (Okay, technically the eleventh, but I’m not going to count that first day when I was still in time-warp jetlag mode.)  It feels like I’ve been here for so much longer.  It honestly sounds really weird to actually say I’ve only been here ten days.  That’s not even two weeks!  I’ve only experienced one Wednesday and one Thursday here.  How wild is that?  It feels like I’ve been here for months.
Anyway, my classes still haven’t started yet!  Woohoo!  So after bugging people on my house facebook page forever, I finally got some people to come with me to the zoo!

It’s not big, and is by no means impressive, but Featherdale Park is such a wonderful place.  For starters, the whole park is free range for their collection of kangaroos and wallabies.  These guys just roam around the park, picking up food scraps and posing for photos.

If there’s a theme for the animals in this park, it’s that they just don’t care.  Whether they were in an enclosure or out, the animals let anyone come right up to them and touch them.  One of the cockatoos even waited on a branch by the edge of a cage for people to come up and pet his head!
And of course, what’s an Australian zoo without the most nonchalant animal in the world: the Koala bear.

We learned that these guys sleep for 20 hours a day, so seeing them awake is actually kind of special.  We also got to hang out with Featherdale’s world-famous koala, Archer!  (There are pictures at the entrance of Kelly Clarkson and an entire Australian band posing with him.) I’m not really sure why he’s the famous one, but he’s adorable and chill as hell.

This whole zoo was host to an amazing array of animals, all of which are native to Australia, and most of which live right in our area.  Of course, I was freaking out the whole time, because I’ve never seen plenty of these animals before!  Australia is home to so many colorful birds and weird creatures!  And because I'm a nerd who's obsessed with every animal, I took pictures of all of them.

Tomorrow at 9AM, my classes finally start.  My first class is one that I will hopefully be dropping soon, but I’m going to go anyway.  I’m a little nervous to actually start school again, since it’s been so long since I’ve actually had schoolwork to do.  This break from school has been so good for me, though.  I’m so happy I’ve had this time to relax and get ready for this big adventure!  I’m going into this school year the happiest and healthiest I’ve been in quite awhile.  I’m really excited to see what the rest of the semester brings!
